Episode 19: Christine Uri, Chief Sustainability and Legal Officer, ENGIE Impact

Christine is a general counsel and sustainability leader. She believes everyone has something to contribute to the most impactful issues of our time including climate change, environment, human rights, social equity and racial justice.

Christine studied law at Boston College Law School. She practiced at a major law firm in the Pacific Northwest of the United States for 8 years before accepting an in-house legal role.

Over her 15+ year career, Christine has advised start-ups, technology companies, nonprofits and global enterprises on a range of issues.

She now serves as the Chief Sustainability and Legal Officer at ENGIE Impact - a global company committed to accelerating the sustainability transformation.

Christine recently launched a new series on LinkedIn using the hashtag #SustainableCounsel. The goal of #SustainableCounsel is to help in-house counsel integrate corporate sustainability practices into their company’s operations.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • how in house professionals can broaden their careers outside of a purely legal focus;

  • corporate sustainability: what it is and how in house legal departments can lead it;

  • a myth about corporate sustainability that Christine debunks;

  • Christine's advice to general counsel who want to improve their companies sustainability performance; and

  • Christine's advice to junior lawyers on how to make the most of opportunities outside their legal day-to-day.
